Job Description
Position Summary:
The Executive Director is Maynard House's chief staff leader, responsible for day-to-day operations and the organization's long-term sustainability under the direction of the Board of Directors. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can move comfortably between strategy, fundraising and community relationships, staff and guest needs, financial oversight, and the practical demands of operating a small nonprofit lodging facility.
Key Responsibilities
Percentages are approximate and may shift based on organizational needs.
Guest Services, Operations, Facilities, and Risk (25%)

Ensure a welcoming, safe, respectful, clean, and affordable experience for guests.

Oversee referrals, occupancy, arrivals and departures, room readiness, guest concerns, and consistent implementation of police guest service policies.

Oversee property maintenance, housekeeping, repairs, vendors, building and security systems, emergency preparedness, and risk-management practices.

Oversee organizational insurance coverage and policy renewals, working with insurance providers and the Board to ensure appropriate coverage and address material risks.

Protect guest privacy and respond appropriately to sensitive situations and operational emergencies.
Fundraising, Communications, and External Relations (25%)

Develop and implement annual fundraising strategy, including appeals, donor cultivation and stewardship, grant development and management, and major gifts.

Build and steward relationships with donors, foundations, businesses, civic and nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and community leaders.

Strengthen referral and partnership relationships with Dartmouth Health, the White River Junction VA Medical Center, healthcare providers, and other community partners.

Serve as a visible ambassador and oversee communications across the website, newsletter, social media, donor materials, annual report, and community presentations.
Organizational Leadership, Strategy, and Board Partnership (20%)

Partner with the Board and its committees on strategy, policies, priorities, and organizational performance; prepare timely reports, meeting materials, and recommendations.

Balance immediate operational priorities with long-term organizational sustainability.

Follow through on Board decisions and maintain clear communication between the Board and staff.

Use data and stakeholder feedback to strengthen programs, systems, partnerships, fundraising, and community impact.
Financial Management, Administration, and Compliance (15%)

Oversee financial health in partnership with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and outside accounting support, including the annual budget, cash flow, revenue, expenses, variances, and authorized expenditures.

Ensure restricted funds, grants, records, filings, renewals, inspections, charitable registrations, and applicable nonprofit and employment requirements are managed accurately and on time.

Maintain effective policies, procedures, documentation, and administrative systems, including accounting, donor management, payment, communications, file-sharing, and security platforms.

Ensure organizational accounts, records, passwords, and critical information remain accessible to the organization.
Human Resources: Staff Leadership and Volunteer Engagement (15%)

Supervise and support employees and foster a professional, collaborative, respectful, and accountable workplace.

Manage staffing, scheduling, hiring, onboarding, payroll, performance feedback, professional development, personnel records, and workplace concerns.

Identify volunteer needs. Coordinate, orient, and recognize volunteers and ensure they understand their responsibilities and confidentiality obligations.
Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and work effectively with a Board of Directors.

Financial literacy and experience developing, managing, or monitoring an organizational budget.

Experience in fundraising, donor stewardship, grant writing, and/or external relations.

Excellent written and verbal communication, relationship-building, organization, and follow-through.

Sound judgment, discretion, initiative, adaptability, and respect for confidentiality.

A collaborative, approachable, and hands-on leadership style, with a commitment to serving patients, families, and caregivers with compassion and dignity.

Bachelor's degree or relevant nonprofit management experience preferred; equivalent combinations of education, experience, and demonstrated leadership will be considered.
